Stylus grew up in DC during a more inclusive time where go-go and hip-hop
had a fruitful coexistence. He remembers being too young to check out
Trouble Funk and Whodini at the Coliseum across the street from his house
so he'd either b-boy on his sidewalk or beat on buckets in his backyard.
Go-go eventually stayed in his heart but hip-hop took root in his blood,
leading him through dancing, mc'ing (no graff writing) and finally to
dj'ing in his teens.
Encountering the Soul Controllers at the
University of Maryland helped hone his embryonic dj'ing style and ushered
him into DC's rapidly developing hip-hop scene. He soon became a fixture
doing club and mobile gigs around town under the Soul Controller mantle
and staying in demand for live shows.
He continues to juggle a day job and various artistic endeavors while always meditating on how to help hip-hop mature into its next incarnation.
